Edible Eden
Namaqualand in Spring Time and Edible Flowers
South Africa's Namaqualand is known for its beautiful carpet of flowers in Spring -- food loving visitors will be enthralled by the many ways of adding colour and flavour to food with indigenous flowers.
Your spring flower trip will include interactive cooking lessons using edible flowers, under the guidance of talented local chefs. Participants will also meet flower book authors and learn more of the medicinal use of plants. Accommodation is offered in a range of unspoilt and authentic Swartland and West Coast villages such as Riebeek Kasteel, Paternoster and Garies. A professionally guided tour to Namaqualand Park to visit our protected flora will provide photo opportunities galore.
You will also meet some of the local indigenous Nama people who still live in reed huts and cook on their traditional protected outdoor koekskerm (cooking area). Informative tastings of locally gathered bulbs, venison and specialities such as suurpap, samp and bredies will offer newfound respect for the hearty cuisine of this region.
Wine and port tastings at some of the well-known estates in the region are included, as are visits to some of the region's award-winning olive and olive oil producers.
Your trip will include:
- Four nights accommodation
- A food-and-wine Pairing Dinner
- Two interactive cooking events under the guidance of professional chefs
- All meals and non-alcoholic drinks
- All South Africa beers and wine chosen by Samp and Soufflé and their suppliers
- A cooking demonstration and meal, prepared in a traditional South African way
- Wine and Port tasting
- In flower season, entry in the Namaqualand National Park
This trip is at its best during August and September during the South African Spring, when the indigenous flowers are in full bloom however, thanks to its pristine natural surrounds, a visit at other times of the year is just as rewarding. In this case, a visit to the Namaqualand Park is easily substituted with a rewarding gourmet activity. Transport, tours guides and translators can be arranged for the group.
