Exclusive Interactive Cooking EventsCombine South African cooking and history in Groot Marico

Steeped in rich South African traditions, this weekend celebrates the best of Boerekos (traditional South African cooking) and the art of cooking the Potjie Kos (a potjie pronounced 'poykey' is a three legged iron pot and traditionally used to prepare a slow cooked stew or casserole). Learn more of the Afrikaans culture in the town of Groot Marico, made famous by raconteur and author Herman Charles Bosman

"There is no other place I know that is so heavy with atmosphere, so strangely and darkly impregnated with that stuff of life that bears the authentic stamp of South-Africa". Herman Charles Bosman.

Groot MaricoLearn more about South African traditional food boerekos, including roosterkoek ('roasted bread'), boerewors ('farmers' sausage'), moer koffie (the closest translation is 'coffee with a kick') and honeybush tea. Visit a traditional mud-brick schoolhouse, now a museum dedicated to the famous author Herman Charles Bosman, and enjoy readings from his books.

Under the chefs' guidance you will learn how to cook traditional potjiekos in the open, under the stars using roaring fires, soaking up the atmosphere of the Groot Marico surrounds and true South African hospitality.

Your weekend stay will include a visit to a mampoer (traditional 'fire water') still for a demonstration and tasting, as well as an encounter a local character who loves reciting poetry about mampoer making. Mampoer is a strong spirit, similar to Schnapps, distilled from cultivated and wild fruit grown in the area.

Your trip will include:

  • Accommodation in a 3-star lodge for one night
  • One interactive dinner prepared under the guidance of a qualified chef
  • All ingredients for interactive dinner
  • All meals and non alcoholic drinks
  • All South African beers and wines chosen by Samp and Soufflé and their suppliers.
  • All excursions including mampoer tasting, a visit to the Herman Charles Bosman Museum and a chili workshop

There is an option of self-drive or transport to the venue can be arranged. This trip can be done at any time of the year. During the winter months (May to August) the days are mild and the nights cold. During summer (October to March) the area is green and lush thanks to regular afternoon showers, but the temperatures can be very hot.
